Although nothing can stop hair from turning gray, there are some conditions that can cause hair to gray earlier or more quickly than normal.
Thyroid disorders. Conditions such as Grave’s disease, Hashimoto’s disease, hyperthyroidism, and hypothyroidism have been linked with premature gray hair.Vitamin B12 deficiency anemia. It can be due to a diet low in vitamin B12, which is found mainly in meat, eggs, and milk. It can also occur if the stomach can’t absorb vitamin B12, due to surgery involving the stomach or small intestine (such as gastric bypass surgery), diseases that affect the small intestine, such as Crohn’s disease, celiac disease, fish tapeworms, or small intestine bacterial overgrowth, or a lack of protein called intrinsic factor due to an autoimmune reaction or a genetic defect. Vitiligo. A condition in which your skin loses melanocytes, resulting in very light patches of skin and possibly premature gray hair. Early menopauseSmoking. Cigarette smoking has been linked to premature gray hair.

Treatments that may influence your gray hair are listed below. (We do not advocate any particular treatment, but merely provides the information).

COLOURING. Of course you can colour hair back to its normal color. This is effective, but not really what most people are looking for in a grey hair treeatment.

CATALASE. Catalase is an enzyme that’s particularly adept at breaking down one of the main reasons why your hair goes gray: an excessive amount of hydrogen peroxide within the body.By working together with Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) and Glutathione Peroxidase, Catalase helps to neutralizes free radicals and excess hydrogen peroxide. You can upregulate your body’s own production of catalase and SOD by taking the supplements GLISODIN or NAC (N-ACetyl-Cysteine) and others. Actually exercise also upregulates this enzyme production, as does the anti-depressant Seleginine.Breaking down hydrogen peroxide and transforming it into its harmless original elements – water and oxygen – makes Catalase one of the most crucial enzymes in the fight against gray hair.

CHINESE MEDICINE: According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, your hair reflects the quality of blood and the strength of the kidneys. The kidneys and blood have a broader role in TCM than they do in Western physiology. Foods that are thought to strengthen the blood and kidneys in chinese medicine are:
Hijiki seaweed.

Blackstrap molasses.

Black sesame seeds.

Wheat grass.

Foods to avoid, according to chinese medicine, are excessive meat, dairy, and salt.
The most popular is a herb called He Shou Wu, also called Polygonum multiflorum or Fo-Ti. The name He Shou Wu means “black-haired Mr. He” in Chinese. This name refers to a legend of an older villager named Mr. He who took this herb and restored his black hair, youthful appearance and vitality.

AYURVEDA for GREY HAIR: In ayurveda, hair is associated with an imbalance in the pitta constitutional type. An imbalance in the vata constitutional type, aggravated by stress, is also associated with premature greying.A herb that is used in Ayurveda for gray hair is called bringaraja, translated as “king of the hair”. Another popular Ayurvedic herb is called amla. It is used for inflammatory conditions, to strengthen eyes, and to address prematurely gray hair.

DMAE-H3: Some people have reported a reversal of grey hair by using DMAE-H3 topically on the grey hair,

VITAMINS for GRAY HAIR: Biotin delays the onset of gray hair and may retard the further progression of gray hair. researchFolic acid helps to prevent gray hair.Inositol has a protective effect on Hair Follicles and via this protection of hair follicles it sometimes prevents or halts the progression of gray hair. researchOccasionally, (in approximately 10-25% of cases) para-aminobenzoic Acid (PABA) use causes gray or white Hair to darken toward its original color (very large dosages of 6-24 GRAMS per day of PABA are required to achieve this effect).- A trial undertaken in 1964 concluded that administration of 6-24 grams of PABA per day for six weeks caused dramatic hair color change and hair regrowth in 5 patients out of 20 (i.e. 25%) with markedly gray hair (hair color returned to gray within three to four weeks of ceasing PABA treatment).
Gray hair is a symptom of vitamin B5 deficiency in rats (this finding does not necessarily extrapolate to humans, although there is scientific speculation that vitamin B5 may also prevent human graying of the hair.

COPPER, ZINC and CALCIUM:Gray hair can occur as a result of calcium deficiency.Copper supplementation sometimes delays the onset of gray hair (due to its role in the production of melanin). Zinc deficiency may cause premature gray hair.

Enzyme treatment stops hair turning grey.

The appearance of grey hair usually marks the start of an impossible battle to hold back time. But scientists claim they may now be able to stop they greying process altogether.Researchers have developed a new treatment which protects the cells that provide hair with its pigment, allowing people to keep their natural colour for longer. They hope to have the treatment on the market within a couple of years and say it could eventually be added to ordinary shampoo and conditioner. While actors such as George Clooney, Meryl Streep and Dame Judi Dench have chosen to live with their grey, hundreds of thousands of people in Britain still chose to hide theirs. The hair colourant market was worth £206.5 million last year. The new treatment works by mimicking an enzyme which can protect the stem cells which produce pigment in hair follicles.Eventually researchers hope they may be able to help people whose hair has already turned grey by replenishing the supply of pigment-producing stem cells altogether.

The hair whitening process is slow and is progressive, so we can prevent it,” said Dr Bruno Bernard, head of hair biology at L’Oreal in Paris, the company which carried out the research.”The stem cells in the hair follicle are more fragile than those found in the skin, but this has opened up an opportunity that I believe we can use to prevent hair whitening.”Hair grows from hair follicles in three to four year cycles. At the end of each cycle, the hair follicle is regenerated from stem cells which lead to a new growth of a hair. The colour of each hair is determined by cells known as melanocytes which produce the pigments that colour hair. Their numbers are kept topped up by a pool of melanocyte stem cells in the hair follicle.Over time the pool of these stem cells declines and so they are unable to refresh the pigment producing cells after each cycle, meaning hair turns grey and then white because it lacks pigment.Dr Bernard and his team have discovered that while melanocyte stem cells in the skin, which does not lose its colour with age, have a crucial enzyme called TRP-2, this enzyme is missing in the hair follicle stem cells. They found that TRP-2 acts to protect the melanocyte stem cells from damage and so help them to last longer. They have now developed treatments that mimic the effect of TRP-2 and can be applied to hair follicles to help maintain a healthy population of melanocyte stem cells and allow hair to retain its colour for longer.Andrew Don, editor of the magazine of the National Hairdressers Federation, SalonFocus, predicted the treatment would find strong demand.”There have been some people who have turned grey hair into a kind of cult status, like George Clooney and Taylor Hicks, who won American Idol recently,” he said. “We get some people going into hair salons to have grey streaks put in to their hair.””Some people feel very strongly that when they start going grey they worry about how they look, feel less attractive and it affects their self esteem.”If a treatment like this works and has no detrimental effects, I suspect there will still be a lot of demand for it.”
